Can someone become a good trader without a mentor?

There are plenty of educational resources available online, but learning independently can involve years of trial and error. A mentor may help shorten the learning process, although finding a genuinely competent one isn't always easy. Do you believe a mentor is necessary, or can a disciplined trader learn everything independently?
