What evidence should a trader have before increasing position size?

Farid Nanchirou

A few winning trades may create confidence, but a larger position also increases the financial impact of mistakes.

Would you require a minimum sample of trades, a period of consistency, or another measurable condition?

Before increasing position size, a trader should look for a statistically significant sample of trades and a proven period of consistency rather than relying on a short streak of wins. A robust rule of thumb is to maintain a fixed risk percentage per trade—such as 1% of your account balance—over a minimum sample of 30 to 50 trades to evaluate your actual expectancy and drawdown behavior.

In prop firm trading, scaling up too fast is one of the quickest ways to breach strict daily loss limits or consistency rules. Always ensure your risk management plan can absorb a string of consecutive losses without jeopardizing your account.

We would love to hear from the community: what specific metrics or milestones do you track before sizing up your trades?
