How Much Documentation Is Required Before Moving a Strategy to a Live Account?

Alex Alexander

Many traders jump into live markets after a short streak of winning trades without proper statistics. What minimum threshold of backtesting data, sample size, and metrics (Win Rate, Profit Factor, Max Drawdown) do you consider sufficient evidence of long-term viability?

Before moving any strategy to a live or funded account, aim for a minimum sample size of at least 100 to 200 trades across varied market conditions. Look for a Profit Factor above 1.5, a stable Win Rate relative to your risk-reward ratio, and a Max Drawdown during testing that comfortably stays within typical prop firm limits.

Having solid backtesting data is especially critical when dealing with strict daily loss limits and consistency rules. A strategy that looks great over a short 10-trade win streak can easily fail once it hits unexpected market volatility.
