How I Read a Failed Auction

Sachin Yadav

A failed auction can tell an interesting story.

Imagine NQ moves above an established resistance level but cannot sustain trading at higher prices.

Price quickly returns below the breakout area.

One possible interpretation is that the market attempted to discover higher prices but failed to attract enough sustained participation.

Before considering a short, I would examine:

  • Whether the breakout level is significant.

  • Whether price actually returns below it.

  • Whether the market confirms the rejection.

  • Where the trade idea becomes invalid.

The important part isn't predicting that every breakout will fail.

It's recognizing when an attempted move higher does not produce the expected result and waiting for evidence before taking a position.
