The Psychology of Taking Profits Too Early

Sachin Yadav

Why is it sometimes easier to cut a winner than to let it reach the target?

Once a trade moves into profit, the fear of losing that unrealized gain can become stronger than the original trading plan.

You close early, watch the market continue in your direction, and feel frustrated.

This can become a pattern that damages your strategy's expected reward-to-risk ratio.

The solution isn't to hold every trade longer.

It's to define your exit rules before entering and evaluate whether they are working across a meaningful sample.

If your plan calls for a specific target or a tested trailing method, follow that plan unless predefined conditions justify an adjustment.

A good exit is one based on a repeatable process, not a moment of fear.
