Reading the Tape

Sachin Yadav

What is tape reading, and why do some futures traders use it?

Tape reading involves observing executed trades as they occur, often using time-and-sales data.

Traders may study trade prices, quantities, and the pace of executions to understand how activity is developing.

For example, a sudden increase in aggressive buying may attract attention. But if price fails to advance despite the activity, the situation deserves closer examination.

Tape reading can be challenging because markets generate large amounts of information very quickly.

I would begin by studying how executions behave around a few important levels rather than attempting to interpret every transaction.

The objective is to identify meaningful behavior, not to react to every print on the screen.
