What a Trading Drawdown Really Means

Sachin Yadav

A drawdown is more than a number on your trading dashboard.

It represents a decline from a previous account equity peak or reference balance, depending on how it is measured.

During a drawdown, many traders feel pressure to recover losses quickly.

That pressure can lead to oversized positions, lower-quality entries, and revenge trading.

I prefer to treat a drawdown as a reason to review my process rather than automatically increase risk.

Are the losses within the strategy's expected range? Am I following the rules? Have market conditions changed? Is there evidence that the strategy needs reassessment?

The answers matter more than the emotional urge to get back to the previous balance immediately.

Recovery should never become an excuse to abandon risk management.
