Can Order Flow Reveal Institutional Intentions?
Can order flow tell you exactly what institutions are planning?
Not reliably.
Order flow data can show executed trades and, depending on the feed, displayed market depth.
It may help identify aggressive participation, changes in liquidity, and price reactions around important levels.
But it generally cannot tell you the complete identity, motivation, or total position of every participant.
A large purchase might be part of a directional position, a hedge, a spread, or an execution strategy.
The same transaction can have different meanings depending on the participant's broader portfolio.
I prefer to focus on what the data actually supports rather than inventing a story about who is buying or selling.
Good market analysis separates observable evidence from speculation.
