What Is an Algorithmic Trading Strategy?

Sachin Yadav

Algorithmic trading doesn't necessarily mean high-frequency trading.

An algorithmic strategy uses predefined rules or computational models to make trading decisions or execute orders.

Some algorithms focus on execution efficiency. Others generate signals using statistical relationships, market structure, or quantitative models.

A retail trader can also automate a relatively simple strategy.

For example, a system might identify a breakout, apply a volatility filter, and manage risk according to predefined rules.

But automation doesn't turn a weak idea into a profitable strategy.

The logic still needs to be tested, and the system must account for execution costs, data quality, and changing market conditions.

The real advantage of automation is consistency and repeatability—not guaranteed profits.
