Understanding Trapped Traders

Sachin Yadav

How do traders get trapped in a breakout?

Imagine ES breaks above resistance and attracts aggressive buyers.

Initially, the move looks convincing. But price fails to continue higher and falls back below the breakout level.

Some buyers who entered above resistance may now be holding losing positions.

If price continues lower, those traders may exit, potentially adding selling pressure.

However, a failed breakout doesn't guarantee a sustained reversal. Some buyers may have hedges, and other participants may enter at different prices.

I watch for the combination of a failed breakout, a clear market reaction, and a defined invalidation level.

The goal isn't to guess who is trapped. It's to recognize when the market fails to deliver the continuation that a breakout appeared to promise.
