The Difference Between Confidence and Overconfidence

Sachin Yadav

Confidence comes from a process. Overconfidence comes from assuming you cannot be wrong.

A confident trader understands their strategy, knows the risks, and accepts that losses are part of trading.

An overconfident trader may start increasing position size, ignoring warning signs, or abandoning predefined rules after a winning streak.

The difference is important.

Confidence should make it easier to follow your process consistently.

It should not make you believe that your next trade is guaranteed to work.

Markets remain uncertain, regardless of how much experience you have.

The objective is not to eliminate doubt completely. It's to make decisions based on evidence while remaining prepared for an unfavorable outcome.

Spot on analysis! Trading psychology is often the hardest hurdle to clear, especially when a winning streak tempts you to throw risk management out the window.

In prop firm trading, overconfidence is usually what triggers a breach of daily loss limits or consistency rules. Sticking to a tested process and predetermined position sizing is the only way to protect your account from sudden market shifts.
