Title: What Makes a Trading Backtest Reliable?

Discussion:

A useful backtest should follow consistent rules across many historical examples. Changing the rules whenever a trade loses can make the results look better than they really are.

I think traders should record every qualifying setup, include realistic costs, and test their strategy on data they did not use to build it.

What method do you use to make sure your backtesting results are realistic?

To ensure backtesting results are realistic, the most reliable method is to use strict, inflexible rules, account for realistic spreads, commissions, and slippage, and test across out-of-sample data. Curve fitting or tweaking rules after losses creates false confidence.

Solid backtesting is essential for prop firm trading. When evaluating firms like My Funded Futures or The5ers, your strategy must withstand strict daily loss limits, consistency rules, and news restrictions. A robust backtest shows how your edge performs under those exact constraints.
