How do you read volume in forex where there is no real volume?

Alex Alexander

Tick volume is only a proxy, but some traders use it successfully. Do you find it useful, or do you prefer futures data? Share how you use volume and whether it improved your entries or filters. Honest answers, including failures and losses, are more valuable here than polished success stories.

In decentralised spot forex, there is no centralised exchange volume, so broker tick volume (counting price changes per bar) is used as a proxy. Futures traders, by contrast, use real exchange-traded volume and order book data like Chicago Mercantile Exchange feeds. Many forex traders find tick volume helpful for spotting momentum shifts or exhaustion, but its limit is that it only reflects activity with a specific broker or liquidity provider, not the entire global market.

When trading forex on prop firms like The5ers or Funding Pips, or switching to futures evaluations with firms like Topstep, volume tools can help refine entries to protect your daily loss limits. However, relying solely on tick volume without factoring in wider spreads during news events can cause unexpected slippage.
