Spread filter vs time filter: which protects a bot better?

Alex Alexander

A bot can avoid bad conditions by checking the spread or by avoiding certain hours like rollover and news. Which filter has saved you more money? Share your settings and examples of trades they prevented.

I’d prioritize the spread filter because high spreads can quickly eat into a scalping bot’s profits. I’d combine it with session limits to avoid rollover and major news releases. For example, the bot could skip entries when spreads exceed its predefined limit or pause around high-impact news. I haven’t measured personal savings from these filters, so I’d compare backtests with and without each filter using net profit, slippage, and maximum drawdown.
