Profit Management Style

Michael Francis

When a trade is working, do you actively trail and scale out or leave the full position to the original target? Which method has produced higher average R for you?

Managing open profit is a balancing act between locking in gains and letting your winners run. Scaling out portions of a position secures cash flow and eases psychological pressure, while holding to the original target often yields a higher average R-multiple over a large sample of trades.

When trading on a funded account, your profit management style directly impacts your drawdown buffers and daily loss limits. Trailing stops too aggressively can choke a winning trade before it hits a meaningful reward-to-risk ratio, whereas leaving a full position open exposes you to sudden reversals.
