The primary structural weakness of using a Golden Cross or Death Cross in a sideways, ranging market is lag and whipsawing. Because moving averages are lagging indicators derived from past price data, they continuously cross back and forth when price chops sideways without a clear trend. This generates false breakout signals, leading to consecutive losing trades that quickly accumulate.

In prop firm trading, taking repeated false signals can be fatal. Tight daily loss limits and drawdown constraints leave very little room for multiple whipsaws. If you rely solely on moving average crossovers in a range, you risk breaching your rules before a true trend ever emerges. Traders often filter these signals using oscillators like the RSI or by waiting for confirmation of a structural break of support and resistance.

How do you filter out false crossover signals in ranging markets? Drop your thoughts below!
