How do you handle trades running during major economic events?

Alex Alexander

Open positions can be hit hard by sudden spikes. Do you close, reduce or move stops before big news? Share your policy and examples where it protected you or caused you to miss a big winner. I'd especially like to hear from people who tested this with real money and what the outcome was.

My rule is to check the economic calendar before major news releases. If I’m holding an open position, I consider reducing exposure or closing part of it, depending on how much profit is already secured and how close the news is. I avoid moving my stop loss farther away just to survive volatility. This approach helps me manage risk and protect my capital, even though sometimes I may miss a big winner when the market moves in my original direction. Risk management comes first.
