Stop Trading Without Understanding Market Structure

Radhey

Before learning Order Blocks, Fair Value Gaps, or Liquidity Sweeps, understand market structure.

A bullish market generally creates Higher Highs (HH) and Higher Lows (HL).

A bearish market generally creates Lower Lows (LL) and Lower Highs (LH).

Market structure helps traders understand the current direction of price rather than randomly predicting where it will go.

Remember: Direction first, entry second.

What's your preferred timeframe for identifying market structure?

Spot on. Trading with the overall market structure—identifying Higher Highs and Higher Lows for bullish trends, or Lower Lows and Lower Highs for bearish trends—is foundational. Direction first, entry second keeps you from fighting the broader order flow.

As for timeframes, many traders look at the 4-hour or 1-hour charts to establish the macro bias, then drop down to the 15-minute or 5-minute charts to time their entries.

Getting structure right is especially crucial when trading on a funded account. Strict daily loss limits and consistency rules leave zero room for guessing trend reversals. Aligning your entries with the dominant market structure helps protect your drawdown and keeps your trades objective.

What's your preferred timeframe for mapping out structure, and how do you handle chop when the market goes sideways?
